Description

Japanese black tea is much rarer and produced in limited amounts compared to the more abundant green tea. We supply a small amount of black tea made from a Benifuuki cultivar grown in the same location as our regular green tea and matcha. Black tea is called 'wakocha' and is totally different from the black teas that you are most probably used to. Hand-picked young leaves. An incredibly smooth and mild tea with zero bitterness.

Lovely Japanese Black Tea

This organic Japanese Black Tea/Wakōcha is wonderful to drink, as always! It's a nice tea to have in the morning to start the day off, and it's a good one to have as a good pick-me-up to get me going right before I get to do something busy. It also makes for a refreshing afternoon tea, as well.

The aroma of the Wakōcha is quite inviting, a nice smell to start off, with a just as inviting dark-reddish like brew, all of which signals tea time. The flavor is very lovely! It's of a smooth profile, and it left a fascinating aftertaste that had a fruit-like note to it. One of the others in my family even thought the taste of the Wakōcha reminded her a bit of the Earl Grey Black Tea, which was an interesting thing to note.

All-in-all, a wonderful experience, as always! I have to thank the fellows at Ocha and co. for getting me introduced into the world of Japanese Black Tea/Wakōcha in the way it happened. I know it's not talked about as much as the other kinds of Black Tea out there, kinda like an underrated gem of sorts, one can perhaps say, so if it wasn't for them, I might have not have thought too much about it. I'd love to come back again to get to try some more of it in the future!

The Organic Japanese Black Tea

A lovely and smooth cup of tea. When having it hot, I tasted the citrus notes with no bitterness:) Another day I tried it as a cold ice tea and it was just as good and enjoyable! I thoroughly enjoyed my Japanese Black tea experience! Thank you Ocha & Co Tea!

... ready to dislike...

I bought this tea some days ago and have put off tasting it for many of those days... so here I am, drinking my 1st cup and writing this note.... i like the Japanese greens very, very much and was ready to be disappointed with the black especially since I like both the Chinese and India teas so much. Well, one sip is all it took... great aroma, smooth, smooth, smooth in a beautiful reddish liquor. Lots of flavor with a base I like but can’t identify. I recommend it not because it’s better or worse than others i’ve had but because it’s different enough to make it interesting and , it’s tasty, besides... 2nd infusion as good as the first... i’ve been won over....

I’ve included a portrait of my new friend below..

Thank you...

PS: great service, quick delivery.

Organic black tea

Great aroma, high quality organic black tea

Thank you Sam. Vlack tea is called 和紅茶 (Wakōcha) or 'Japanese Black Tea'. The first production was in the Edo period 1603 onwards - it is making a revival now. One of my favourites as I was brought up drinking black tea in the UK.

Simple and smooth

It's not a very flavorful black tea, but it's exceptionally smooth. As promised, it does lack the bitterness most black tea has, making it perfect for re-steeps. Like other commentators, I agree that the tea needs a name other than "Japanese Black Tea", but I understand if there's only one style of black tea Japan produces.

Satisfying & Delicious

This harvest / vintage seemed different and stronger than previous batches, but after finding the right balance, the taste is very satisfying and delectable.
Thanks Ocha for providing these great products.

Give it a name

The tea is excellent both as a self drinker and traditionally with milk and sugar. I am puzzled by the lack of an identifier on the package. All the other teas I purchase from China, Columbia, USA, and Japanese growers put the name of the tea and sometimes the varietal on the package. Your package says quite generically "Japanese black tea". I intended to purchase Benefuuke black tea, it would be nice to have my selection confirmed on the labeling.

Different, worth a try

This wakocha tastes better than it smells! The scent can be slightly offputting- slightly rubbery and marine. Once brewed (slightly lighter than instructions called for), it tastes better.

Morning brew

I wake up every morning to this earthy sweet aroma steaming in my cup. I always add a touch of buckwheat honey and cinnamon. Dark amber 😋

Highly recommend

Very forgiving in case you over-steep because it is not bitter. I'm not usually a black tea drinker but I like this one and recommend.

Amazing flavor and trustworthy company!

I bought several teas including Gyokuro, Matcha Organic & Kyojo as well as the black tea. They all exceeded my standards! They have a warning of the shipments being a little delayed but to me did not feel like a long wait. (About 4-5 days from when ordered). Regardless totally worth the wait! All of the teas I bought had a very fresh and original flavor! Will be buying from Ochoa & Co. again!
Thank you! 🙏
