About Wakasa Inoue

Wakasa Inoue has been officially recognized as a master craftsman for traditional arts by the Japanese government. He was an apprentice under the strict tutelage of his father for 3 years before he was considered ready enough to produce whisks ready to be sold. He took on the traditional artisan name from his father in his thirties and became the 3rd generation master whisk-maker in his family. He spends a lot of his time now training the future generation of whisk-makers and documenting the history and styles of whisks for the national archive. His work can be found in the prestigious Takashimya department store in Tokyo and is recognized even among his peers for its high quality.

You can tell the difference!

All whisks may look the same to an untrained eye but a Matcha drink made with a Nara Takayama Chasen made by a master craftsman will be completely different. Apart from the exceptional workmanship, the locally sourced bamboo is of exceptional quality due to the harsh snowy winters that make the bamboo harder than that found in other areas of Japan.

First time using a bamboo whisk...

I bought the whisk with intentions of using it to match the overall aesthetic when I make my matcha [抹茶] (also purchased from Ocha & Co.)。It's been about a month and after 8 total uses it has still maintained it's most of its original shape, color and has shown no signs of fraying. Although the ends have uncurled after multiple uses it maintenance is fairly simple. I place it on the palm of my hand, not flat but slightly cuffed and gently push down repeatedly until it regains its shape.

Closing thoughts: If someone were to ask me where they could buy 抹茶 and other Japanese products, I would suggest Ocha & Co.

The pictures are to give you an idea of how it looks after repeated use and maintenance. Enjoy making ocha! :)

Best Whisk Ive used.

This whisk works so much better than the one I purchased in Japan while I was there. I think the whisk has finer strands that allow it to mix the matcha much better and also achieve a greater froth.

Genuine & Authentic Craftsmanship

Genuine & Authentic Craftsmanship.
Purchased top 2 best seller Bamboo Chasen from Amazon, No comparison whatsoever to the quality and authenticity of the Chasen I purchased from Ocha.
I sincerely admire my Chasen, it's a delicate piece of art..

Nara Chasen by Wakasa Inoue

The Nara Chasen is beautifully crafted, handle feels smooth, the weight is perfect and comfortable to use, the 80 prongs each separated by black thread are curved elegantly, and awaiting the moment of use in preparing wonderful foam and blending the matcha. As you prepare the Chasen for making the matcha, the artistry of the master craftsman is captivating. I’m grateful Wakasa Inoue has shared his artistry in making the Chasen.

Lovely quality

This whisk is very smooth and well made, with no rough edges or 'bits' falling off into your tea. And after a few weeks of daily use it hasn't lost its shape or efficiency at all. It only takes a matter of seconds to whisk up a bowl of matcha, perfect and lump-free every time (I make mine with oat milk, heated on the stove). After use I just give the whisk a quick rinse under the tap and let it air dry – no hassle at all and ready for its next use. Highly recommended, and Ocha & Co.'s service is second to none.

Well made product

Whisk comes neatly packed in paper box which contains plastic container with whisk itself.
Whisk looks exactly the same as in product images. It is sturdy and well made. It is easy to use and my inexperienced attempts on Matcha preparation resulted in nice foam.

This whisk is a bit pricey but you get a great product which is well worth it. Delivery, order tracking and customer services were great.

Excellent products

This is the second chasen I have purchased from Ocha & Co. -- the first for show (they are very nicely made objects), this one for use. Along with the matcha and chashaku I purchased at the same time, I have had very good results. Just a beginner, I hope to become more experienced and this well-made whisk will obviously last a long time.

Excellent Whisk ! Top notch quality

A people say you pay for what you get and this is a true authentic one. after using the first looking at the Blooming of the prongs you can clearly see the difference with other cheaper one. if you take care properly of the whisk it can definitely last for a while.

Simple and crafted well

Well crafted matcha whisk and comes with a container that holds the whisk after use. Definitely need a whisk to completely remove all clumps in your tea

Great product and customer service

We have been using the bamboo whisk and matcha green tea powder with Oatly milk. Divine. It tastes just like a cafe-made matcha latte.

I recommend pre-heating your bowl and bamboo whisk to soften the bristles before use.

functional piece of art

the wisk is delicate though strong. The difference in the froth on the matcha compared to a wire wisk is so great you will be amazed!

Great quality

I used a metal whisk for a long time. The difference in foam that this makes is amazing. Plus, the, the subtle bamboo smell is quite nice. I do also wish it came with care instructions.

Amazing

I've been to Japan where I was taught how to make matcha properly. These products make me feel like I'm back making tea authentically, and I love it!

Wish there were care instructions...

I love the whisk, it does the job well. My only critic is that I would have liked to have some cleaning and care instructions because my whisk now has an unsightly crack which I assume is from hot water when I rinsed it after use.

Not your Typical Whisk

First, I would like to give respect and praise for the craftsmanship and time to make the chasen. I’m in love how light weight, durable and how it makes that frothy topped matcha. I will take good care of this item forever and in every use. It’s more than money’s worth spent but the art of well prepared tea. Thank you and I will recommend to my fellow Otaku.

Beautiful

I thought I might take up the habit of whisk-making until I watched the video of the craftsman making this whisks. It's beautiful and works very well. Novice matcha drinkers: it's worth purchasing a proper whisk like this!

Whisk

My husband asked me why whisk is so expensive and I have to get it from here. I told him “it’s made by master!”. It works great!
